'''காயஸ்தர்''' (''Kayastha'') எனும் சமூகத்தினர் [[வட இந்தியா]]வில் வாழ்பவர்கள். இவர்களின் குலத்தொழில் அரசாங்கம் மற்றும் செல்வந்தர்களின் கணக்குகளை பராமரிப்பவர்கள் ஆவார். காயஸ்தர்கள் தங்களை எமலோகத்தில் மக்கள் செய்த பாவ-புண்ணியங்களை கணக்கிட்டு வைக்கும் [[சித்திரகுப்தர்|சித்திரகுப்தனின்]] வழித்தோன்றல்கள் எனக்கூறிக்கொள்கின்றனர். [[பிரித்தானிய இந்தியா]]வில் காயஸ்தர்கள் [[வருவாய் கிராமம்|கிராம வருவாயை]] கணக்கீடு செய்யும் கணக்காளர்களாக இருந்துள்ளனர். இவர்களைப் போன்றே வட தமிழ்நாட்டில் [[கருணீகர்]] எனும் சாதியினர் கிராமக் கணக்குகளை கையாளுபவராக இருந்தனர்.

காயஸ்தர்களில் மூன்று பிரிவின்ர் உண்டு. அவைகள்: வங்காள காயஸ்தர், சித்திரகுப்த வம்ச காயஸ்தர் மற்றும் சந்திரசேனியா காயஸ்த பிரபு ஆகும்.
